The practical interests of the species would then be subjugated to our own, unless they happened to be entirely compatible, which is unlikely. Ultimately we would do whatever suited our best interests in the circumstances that we encountered. I can't foresee China or Russia treating them any better than they shamelessly treat their own people. A religiously-dominated society like the US would ultimately send missionaries to "save" them which would result in their complete psychological and cultural destruction as it always has here on Earth. I would like members of an alien race to treat us as--at the least--intellectual equals and share their knowledge with us. Not with the governments--with the people as a whole. Even if they are less "advanced" the we are, we could still learn a very great deal from them. Depends on which group of mankind you’re talking about.
