Solar flares are a normal activity on the Sun and happen all the time. They usually have no effect on Earth because they are limited to the surface of the Sun. Sometimes they are related to coronal mass ejections, material ejected from the Sun's corona which can reach Earth. In most cases, these are deflected by the Earth's magnetic field, sometimes causing aurora borealis (northern lights). Contrails are moisture ejected by jet aircraft which provide condensation centres in the sky for clouds, but have no effect on coronal mass ejections.
