The distant space probes Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and Voyagers 1 and 2 disproved the existence of Planet X, as hypothesized by Lowell
the existence of objects potentially as massive as the Earth, which could escape detection in this manner, and would not create noticeable discrepancies in the orbits of the outer planets. Such an object could be considered “Planet X” only in the popular sense, not in the scientific sense.

Planet X is a hypothetical planet originally proposed to account for the orbits of the other planets. The calculations that led to the need for this planet however were largely disproved.

However, more recently it is proposed (though still remains highly speculative) that there may be a large object outside the Kuiper belt (a large belt of small orbiting objects including Pluto and the recently discovered ‘planets’ Quaoar, Sedna and 2003 UB313).

Interestingly, the international astronomical union is currently debating whether to define Quaoar, Sedna and 2003 UB313 officially as planets or whether to relegate Pluto down so that it is no longer a planet.
