The galactic alignment people don't seem to question whether that precise alignment has occurred before in the history of the world. Evidence strongly suggests it has (in 1998, even, according to Wikipedia), and the world did not come to a remarkable, clattering end on any of those occasions. The significance of 2012 is merely drawn from the coincidence that this alignment occurs on the solstice, which just happens to be the last day in this particular cycle of the Mayan calendar. And no one should be surprised that the Mayan calendar ends on a solstice -- it's not a sign of doom, just of accurate solar observation. Their arguments do not stand up to reasoned examination. But of course, the ultimate vindication will occur when we all wake up on December 22, 2012. No, I don’t believe they do.
