Does the design of the Mayan calendar itself show that they were aware of gears and torque?
and would have used it for more than just a calendar?

No the mayans had no technology like that as they had no metal tools or” draft animals necessary for wheel-based modes of transportation”
since they were astronomers the calendar was most likely derived by the rotation of the solar system.

No, the most famous depiction of it is round, but it is fixed, completely different for example to the Antithera mechanism. There is also a strong lack of any complex mechanism by the Maya.
