Doomsday was also supposed to be on 5/5/2000, but nothing happened. As for what Steph said about solar flares, it's a distinct possibility. The sun operates on an 11 year cycle of activity that will conincidentally peak in 2012. Solar flares have been known to knock out power grids, etc., but there still is no actual proof to state that this cycle will be any different than it was in 2001. But it could be...
