If this happens, I’d like to see the owners of crackpot doomsday websites pursued through the courts with civil if not criminal charges. A few years in jail would shut them up in future. But it ain’t gonna happen, unfortunately.

Even though the May 21, 2011, is of concern to less people, I suspect that there might be more suicides because of the “faith” aspect.

The Big 2012 Hoax is scheduled for Dec. 21 (not 23). Many years ago, there was still some debate among the hoax supporters because there existed two ways to “register” the dates of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar. Therefore, day number 13.00.00.00.00 could match Dec. 21 or Dec. 23, depending on which method you decided to use.

Then along came a real expert who explained how the Mayan calendar really worked and, all of a sudden, it was found that the hoaxers could be off by as much as 50 years. So, in order to “save” the hoax, everyone agreed to use Dec. 21 and drop any reference to Dec. 23.

However, the Big 2012 Hoax itself is so full of self-contradictions that more and more people are figuring out that it just does not make much sense.

In fact, the Big 2012 Hoax would have been forgotten by now, if Roland had not decided to make a movie called “2012″ (even though it is actually based on an earlier version of the hoax) and if Sony Pictures – having invested over 200 million in Roland’s production – had not make the fake “documentaries” that were meant as disguised ads for the movie.

Faith (even when misplaced that much) makes it easier for people to enter into suicide pacts (since that is what you are asking about) rather than just hearing about rumors.

That is why I vote for May 21 as my answer to your question.

Well, the only place I read about either of them is here. I think the idea appeals to a certain demographic who haven’t enough life experience to really analyse anything, and simply latch onto something because it’s new and sounds intelekshul. It isn’t a group who analyse something to the point of despair and suicide. When it fails to happen, it doesn’t seem to worry them. It’s gone. Who can I text now?
