Is the 2012 doomsday myth the worst one yet?

Is the 2012 doomsday myth the worst one yet?
Most doomsday myths are started very soon before doomsday. In 1999, we thought the world would end in 2000. In 2007, some crazy woman on the internet said the world would end before 2008. Every doomsday mth starts ~1 year before the projected doomsday date.

However, we have to hear about this one for FOUR MORE YEARS. Why do they punish us like this??

If you listen to Geddy Lee, you’ve got 104 more years to go.

You’re right. How much advance notice did George Miller give his fleeced, I mean flock?
My favorite was the “Nasa Scientist” who wrote “84 Reasons the Rapture Will Happen in ’84″ followed a year later by “85 Reasons I was a Year Off Last Time”.

Some nonsense in the media about the Mayan calendar

And a desperate wish, by some, for the “Rapture”

Maybe this is the tribulation, having to listen to them going on and on and on about it…

Apparently, this doomsday myth has been around for a REALLY long time. The first I heard of it was in 2006, but apparently it came from the Mayans.

It’s funny, though, that we have so many people believing in this load of bull puckie.

–A While ago I also saw someone say the world will end in 2015.

You know that all these predictions mean! That we won’t know the day or the hour like it says in the bible.

  5. Skyhawk says:

Yes, the world will end in 2012 because an extinct race of people ran out of ink and parchment, so they couldn’t finish printing their calendar.

If they were so advanced and prophetic, where are they now?

One of three outcomes i see will happen. Either Sarah Palin gets elected in 2012 and ends it herself (by accident), she gets elected and someone else ends it for everyone else (like a mercy killing), or she doesnt get elected and the human race continues.

I see your point. Of course, there have been lots of doomsday myths throughout history–many of which started several years before their projected date.

For example, the Adventists predicted the rapture in 1843 for several years before that. Also, the Watch Tower Society predicted the rapture in 1914 from at least the late 1870s.

Also, the Jehovah’s Witnesses began predicting 1975 as the date for the end of the world in the mid-1960s.

In short, there always have–and always will be–doomsday prophets. The fact is that doomsday prophecy is a growth industry. There will always be a population of suckers who buy into this tripe, and there will always be hucksters that are willing to sell it to them.

As an example, note that the Watch Tower Society has been around for almost 130 years–that’s 94 years after their first big false prophecy failed. Talk about resilient!!
