Of course, there have been lots of doomsday myths throughout history--many of which started several years before their projected date. For example, the Adventists predicted the rapture in 1843 for several years before that. Also, the Watch Tower Society predicted the rapture in 1914 from at least the late 1870s. Also, the Jehovah's Witnesses began predicting 1975 as the date for the end of the world in the mid-1960s. In short, there always have--and always will be--doomsday prophets. The fact is that doomsday prophecy is a growth industry. There will always be a population of suckers who buy into this tripe, and there will always be hucksters that are willing to sell it to them. As an example, note that the Watch Tower Society has been around for almost 130 years--that's 94 years after their first big false prophecy failed. Talk about resilient!! I see your point.
