Q&A: Does anyone genuinely believe that the world will end in 2012?

Does anyone genuinely believe that the world will end in 2012?
My best friend religiously believes this…she claims that the Mayans have predicted everything on their calender, and the next thing predicted is the end of the world in 2012. I believe the end of the world is going to happen when least expected. Just curious to what everyone else thinks…

I believe the world will end when the sun explodes not when the imaginary friend acts in a irrational way killing billions of people….

  2. Paladin says:

Not for a moment. The Mayans were a clever people, but I do not believe that they, nor any other people, have the ability to “predict” the end of the world by magical/mystical means.

    You bet !

Haven’t you ever heard the famous quote by P.T. Barnum (of Barnum & Bailey Circus)

The quote is, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

Jesus said that nobody knows but the father. So it can’t be 2012

What do calendars have to do with religion? I highly doubt that the world will end in four years. If it does, I would be pretty angry since that’s probably the year i’m getting my master’s degree.

No one knows the day or the hour of the coming of the Lord.

  7. Shadowzoid says:

ok, look. ppl think that the world ends in 2012 because the Mayans end their calander at that year. But think about this: THE MAYANS DECLINED AND DIED! they couldnt make calanders forever. they had to stop at one point! thats the answer to why the calander ends at that date. they just simply stopped making calanders.

also, the mayans predict a celebration of a king past 2012. which means they didnt beleive the world would end there

No, Your friend is an idiot and should not believe every conspiracy theory that they hear..

  9. KID 4 CHRIST says:

… Okay. First, i don’t think the mayans predicted that they would end up where they are today… Sure the called some of it right, but so can anyone else.

Well the world could end any time however I also think it will be when its least expected. For centuries people have always been predicting the end or Armageddon.

Only the Father knows, not even Jesus Christ himself knows.

Not me, and what religion is your friend, or do you mean she believes in it unswervingly?

I have not met anyone who does yet.

One of several Mayan calendars is the Long Count calendar, which is reset to day 0 every 1,872,000 days or 7057.5 years. The next reset date, by some calculations, is December 21, 2012. This is not a prediction of the end of the world.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.
