Question for Jews: Is there any significance to the Mayan calendar? Or just the Jewish calendar?
People make this big deal about the Mayan calendar and 2012. But really, I think the only significant calendar with the end times is the Jewish calendar, because it’s according to that calendar that you’ll find real prophecies taking place.

Its interesting that both are based on a cycle of 50 years, other than that I would not read much into the Mayan calendar issue.

    I am not Jewish.

  2. Cher was here JPA says:

Why would Jewish people care about the Mayan calendar? FYI, Judaism doesn’t have an endtimes scenario. The messiah will bring peace, not destruction of others first.

  3. What up Buttercup says:

2012 is a re-election year and if Obammy & the dumbocrats get re-elected, it will be the end of the world.

Good point. I see what you’re saying. This is a bit over my head, but if you are interested, a good place to start is Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan’s “Age of the Universe”: (see source below) or this brief discussion: http://www.jewishblogging.com/blog.php?bid=74947.

Judaism does talk about cycles. They don’t coincide with Christianity as Cher mentions, but the Earth has ages that are spoken of by our sages and appear in the Days of Creation in Genesis. There will be a final age when the Earth is rectified.

How close the Mayans got it — I don’t know. But it is an interesting theory. Keep on reading!

Well, the Mayan calendar was important scientifically as it is evidence that the Mayans had a great deal of mathematical and astronomical understanding and 2012 AD has nothing to do with the Jewish calendar or with Jewish religious beliefs.

I predict that about as much will happen in 2012 as happened with the xtian calendar turning to 2000 AD about ten years ago; a whole lot of nothing.
