Psychologically, some people have trouble coping with life. That happens whether people are religious or not, and it happens with all sorts of religious people. There has been more than one suicide cult in Japan that was focused on the end of the world. Some other group went to the middle east in 1999 in hopes of starting World War III to bring about the end of the earth. The Heaven's Gate cult donned their new Nike shoes and killed themselves so they could join a spaceship in the tail of a comet. It's an interesting and frightening phenomenon. But it has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with feeling cornered in the world and out of control. It has a lot in common with people who believe conspiracy theories, actually. They don’t.
