Buy a book called Science is golden by Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki Chapter 2. Unless your not Australian, which is likely.

The Mayans created the Long Count Calendar, a time measurement system that had spiritual significance to their culture. They organized their calendar into several cycles, the last of which will end in December 2012. Some people think the Mayans had discovered that after 2012, the world would end.
There are dozens of theories about how this might happen. Some claim that 2012 is when the Earth will experience a polar shift.
The thing is, there have been a number of “Doomsday’s” over the ages, of which the most known is the year 2000, very controversial, several people committed suicide to not witness the end of the world… the one who did not killed our selves noticed no end of the world.

There is no scientific basis for this whatsoever, so you don’t have to worry.

Well, scientists like a good laugh, after they had been busy explaining, that Mayanism, on which the Doomsday 2012 stuff is based on, has nothing to do with the real Maya and their religion.

The real Maya did not believe that their world will end. They even celebrated one of their kings, King Pacal of Palenque, by predicting him, that he will still be worshipped in 4772 BC (their way to say: Long live the king).

Mayanism was created in the early 1970s from New Age followers, and is a mix of real Maya mythology, misinterpretations and pseudo-astronomic claims.

They claim, that the end of the world is predicted in the Popol Vue, the holy book of the Maya. But that claim is wrong. The Popol Vue is not the holy book of the Maya. It is a collection of Maya mythology written down by catholic missionaries almost 500 years after the fall of the Maya civilization. It does also not make predictions on the end of the world. But it describes the end of the previous two worlds, in which the gods tried to create life, but failed. The current world was made of Maize in the Maya mythology and because of that, was a success.
