The Maya Natives of Mexico established the “Long Count”, which lasts approximately 1,872,000 days = 5125.36 years.
The Earth goes through 3 cycles called Rotation (1 Day), Revolution (1 year), Precession (1 Galactic Day). Now the first two are extremely common, but the third is so rare and so long not even Methuselah could last. A Galactic Day, to us, is around 25,625 years!

As there are 5 phases in a day (Morning, Mid-day, Afternoon, Late-Night, Night before Dawn), Thus there as 5 phases in a Precession. The Mayas came up with this
The Earth takes 24 hrs to make one rotation, the Galaxy takes about 25,625 years to make one rotation. So since we consider a rotation a day, the term Galactic day applied to the rotation of the galaxy.
Long Count: 5125.36 years x 5 phases = 25,626.8 years… close enough.

During a day, we also experience 2 moments of twilight: Dawn and Dusk. That, of course, depends on the sun. Since the Galaxy doesn’t revolve around anything (That we know of), the Mayas considered the dawn and dusk periods (for the galaxy) to be when the Earth passes the Galactic Equator. These would be during the “Afternoon” phase and the dividing line between “Night Before Dawn” and “Morning” phases.
On December 21, 2012 there will be a Galactic alignment between the Galactic Equator, the sun, and the Earth at winter solstice. The “Night Before Dawn” phase is ending and we’re starting a new Precession.

That doesn’t sound like anything to worry about. Maybe this’ll change your mind:
There are 12 key nodes on the Earth’s grid along with a series of lay lines in which internal energy from within the Earth transmits itself in the form of a vortex. They’re known as the Devil’s graveyards. I know it sounds a little far fetched, but it’s a proven fact. When in these certain areas people can just “feel” the energy. Compasses and other items focused on magnetism cease to operate in these areas. Example of these areas: Bermuda Triangle, Dragon Triangle, Giza Plateau, Easter Island, North & South Poles.
The North Pole is the strongest of these energy fields. That’s why a compass, unless thrown off by some other close range magnet, will always point “Magnetic North”.
By studying the cracks of the tectonic plates and flow of magma/lava, that the molten iron, unless effected by gravity, will solidify flowing towards magnetic North. Geologists have determined that after a couple of thousand years the polarity of the Earth switches to the South Pole. The reason for this is unknown.

It has been estimated that the last time there was a Pole Shift, it had occurred roughly around 10,800 BC. 10,800BC + 2000AD = 12,800 years. 12,800 years x 2 = 25,600.
Where was the Earth (in respect to our Galaxy) 12,800 years ago?
On the other side of the Milky Way, undergoing a similar Galactic alignment. Our solar system was passing the galactic equator from the Southern Hemisphere into the North. In 2013, we’ll be passing from the North into the Southern Hemisphere of our galaxy.
The Mayas believed that in passing this imaginary line, our minds are to open up and we should be able to experience our full potential with telepathy and telekinetic powers. We are to become more spiritual and supernal… Skeptics fear the worst: crossing the galactic equator will neutralize the Earth’s polarity and the gravitational plain of the Southern Hemisphere will shift the magnetic pull of the Earth, throwing us off balance, creating in two words: Global Cataclysm. It could be one, it could be both, it could be neither or it could mean nothing at all.

In closing we won’t really know what’s in store for us until after 12/21/12.

These predictions are scare tactics, conspiracy theories, and chances to make money from books and movies.

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” (Mark 13:32-33)

Jesus told us in no uncertain terms that we were not to know when the end of the world would come but that we were always to be ready.

The early Christian Church thought that Jesus was going to return at any moment. Only after a couple of centuries did the Church realize that it may be 2,000 or 4,000 or 8,000 years before Jesus returns.

The Catholic Church wisely follows Jesus’ advice and teaches that each of us should live as if we will meet our maker in the next ten minutes and that we need to work to make the world a better place for our 100 X great-grandchildren.

Do not worry about the end of the world. Trust God to make sure everything happens to plan. Just be ready to meet God at any time.

I don’t think anyone should worry about it or let it interfere with their daily lives. Live as long as you can – live as if you were to die tomorrow or even in 2012, but feel as if you were to live forever.
