What makes the 2012 predictions more realistic than the other predictions from the past of worlds end?

What makes the 2012 predictions more realistic than the other predictions from the past of worlds end?
Not sure if I believe any of the predictions, but it fascinates me how people are taking these predictions more seriously than the past ones.

Answer by Judson Tomaiko
they’re taking them as serious as all the others. Do you remember the one about new years on 2000? It was practically chaos

Nothing at all…this is a HOAX used to sell movies and books. You’d think people would get wise to all these constant ‘predictions’ of the end which don’t end up happening.

By the way, this isn’t an astronomy question but I hope a sober look at the 2012 claims in the light of rational thought dissuades your fears.

  2. Nabi says:

There was no prediction. People saw the calender, and saw that it ended in 2012..Simple, right?
Well, add that to the poles shifting, the Andromeda Galaxy possibly colliding with ours, 9/11, the Japan earthquake, Haiti..And, I don’t know what to say. People just get paranoid.
The Andromeda galaxy isn’t due to collide with ours for a million years, or 100,000. Earthquakes, believe it or not, happen all the time. Occasionally, a few bad ones slip through, but its normal.

I don’t know what to say..I’m confused about it myself..

Because those predictions seem so real, like tsunami in japan, etc.

people just need yet another stupid thing to worry themselves about or an excuse to be lazy or overinduldge. IMO.

I wouldn’t say that they’re more realistic, but rather that they’re more widely believed. And I think that fact is mostly down to internet culture – it’s much easier now for anyone to find any amount of “facts” to back up whatever theory they want to believe, and also incredibly easy for them to find other like-minded people with whom they can share and develop ideas, so these things can spread and diversify like never before. Like yourself, I find all these theories fascinating without believing any of it myself, as much for the social psychology side of it as for the entertainment of seeing what new “facts” they might come up with.

To anyone capable of rational thought, they are not realistic at all. Compared with other end of the world predictions they are some of the most ludicrous ever dreamed up. Planet X/Nibiru – no sign of it. Pole shift – not physically possible before or during 2012. Solar storm – solar activity now expected to be lower than at the last maximum in 2001. Any planetary or solar alignment – doesn’t have the slightest effect on us. And so it goes on until all the claims are dismissed and there is nothing left to distinguish 2012 from 2013, 2014, etc., in other words – just another year.

-Ok, so the Mayan calendar stopped in 2012. Maybe they ran out of stone, or got a little tired of it.

-The tsunami in Japan is the same as the tsunami in Indonesia (2004), and the tsunami in Lituya Bay, Alaska (1958) and in Chile (1960).

-Earthquakes are normal. About 100,000 happen each year.

-Some people believe that in 2012 a planet called Planet X or Nibiru will collide with or pass by Earth. However if this was possible it would already be visible to us today in the night sky.

-On December 13th 2012 the Earth will come in to perfect alignment between the sun and the center of the galaxy and this alignment will cause the earth to be affected by additional gravity. So the theory goes that the additional gravity created by the alignment will knock the earth out of it’s orbit, and possibly into the path of a comet. However, the additional gravity created by the alignment is minuscule on the cosmic scale and would barely register.

    - Some ways Earth could really end are by massive asteroid impact, massive volcanic eruptions (even the Yellowstone supervolcano which sits on top of a massive magma chamber which would probably take out most of the people living between the Rockies and the Appalachians next time it erupts wouldnt end the Earth), the sun expanding, or some other exponentially ridiculous event.

We’ve got only a billion good years left on this planet, which is long after our time so nobody should be worried. And EVEN IF the world were to “end” sometime before a billion years, everybody would be turned into dust before they even knew what was happening. So nobody would feel any pain, live to tell the story, or have time to worry. You’ll all wake up on December 22nd 2012.

Well the “famed” Nostradamus said so… along with the Mayans.

But I think it’s all the global warming hype that prepped people to believe in it so much

Everybody’s sayin’ that the Scatman stutters
But doesn’t ever stutter when he sings.
But what you don’t know I’m gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the scat is the same thing.
    Yo I’m the Scatman.
    Where’s the Scatman ? I’m the Scatman.
Why should we be pleasin’ all the politician heathens
Who would try to change the seasons if they could?

because when scientists say ‘it’s possible” people freak the f*ck out. but they don’t realize that things worse than 2012 are also possible. people always seem to assume the worst.

I think it is the same as the old ones… i dunno how old yo are but im 19 so in 2000, I was still a kid so I didn’t feel any of the fear of the world ending but I just had a conversation about that with my mom, she told me that people believed it just as much as they believed it in 2000

  15. BigTuna says:

because people will believe anything they hear on tv, its mainstream and they use it to make money, the world was supposed to end in 2000 yet were still here
