And you're onto something about the Mayan calendar, but there's even less to it than that--their calendar doesn't end in 2012, it cycles (a bit likes our did at the end of 1999). Stars of all types and ages can exist at nearly any part of the galaxy. The Sun is actually about halfway through its primary life cycle--it won't run out of hydrogen for another 5 billion years or so.
