Who was the first person to misinterpret the Mayan Long Count as a doomsday prophecy?
A lot of people think the Mayan Calender predicts the end of the world. I know that its simply the end of the current Long Count cycle, but those folks don’t. Obviously, it has to originate with someone. Who was the first person to make the mistake of thinking the start of the new Long Count would be the end of the world.

Michael D. Coe, I think. In 1966, he wrote:
“…there is a suggestion…that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [b'ak'tun]. Thus…our present universe [would] be annihilated [in December 2012] when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion.”
