It's a fraud on so many levels that there is entire web site, frequently updated exposing the lies.

The Mayan non-calendar does not end. They used three systems of counting the days. One of them was just a count and we are close to the end of one group of 144,000 days. That's all.

1960s. Maya writing is partially translated. The complex Mayan system of counting time is worked out. It seems they started counting days from sometime about August 3114 BC and their system included a bak'tun of 144,000 days. If some of the archeologists guesses are correct, then the 13th bak'tun will be filled up on 21 December 2012. But it could be months either way. The Maya in one city think that 13 is a lucky or sacred number. A different Mayan city thinks the 20th bak'tun is
more significant, but that's not till after 4770 by our count. Too far away for predictions of the end of the world to be profitable.

1980s. Dr. Jose Arguelles, formerly a leading figure in the foundation of "Earth Day" claims to be an astrologer. He also claims to be a reincarnated Maya princess. He is obsessed with time and the Maya, and claims the way we count time is damaging the environment. He starts to claim that there will be a great spiritual change on 21 December 2012 or thereabouts because one damaged Mayan inscription says something about nine somethings (probably gods) descending from somewhere to somewhere else. Two others jump on his bandwagon with different magical ideas.

1990s, Nancy Lieder begins to claim that she has been abducted by aliens and told that "Planet X" is on it's way to destroy or damage the Earth on 13 May 2003. A friendly warning from the folks at Zeta Reticuli, like. She starts a web site and forum. This attracts the usual crowd of wackos and frauds. Some people start making a bit of money selling books and videos about it.

14 May 2003. What happened? No planet X, no doom or disaster. But there is money to be made so the planet X fakers just transfer the fatal day to match up with Arguelles' stuff about the Maya and 21 December 2012.

2003 - 2006. More fakers jump on that bandwagon with lies and nonsense about another fake planet called Nibiru, planetary alignments, Nostradamus, photon belts, solar flares, increasing catastrophes, galactic line-ups, claims that the ancient Egyptians, Chinese or the Hopi predicted it. More books and videos are sold and web sites begin to appear with faked up supporting clips on YouTube to promote them. Some frauds offer to build survival shelters. A few people actually spend the money.

By 2006 school kids are asking about it. Most adults who ever hear about it realise immediately it's all fake, but there are enough paranoids and very gullible ones to make it worthwhile for the frauds to stay in business.

2006 or so. Movie makers spot a trend and come up with a low grade movie with a hackneyed plot and bunch of special effects. It makes money from kids, most adults would not cross the street if admission was free unless they wanted to get out of the rain.

By 2009 surviving Maya (7 million strong) are alternately amused and annoyed by questions about doom in 2012. Mayan leader Apolinario Chile Pixtun having just returned from a visit to the United Kingdom is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out". "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."

March 2011. Arguelles dies, probably regretting that his mostly innocent predictions have been taken over by frauds.

By late 2011 at least 110,000 questions have been asked about it on Y!A with at least half a million answers, most of them asked by children under 16. Apart from one or two cranks, nearly all the informed adults who answer say it is all lies and they have the science to prove that.

Between 13 May 2003 and today at least 17 other raptures or ends of the world have passed almost without notice, to the sorrow of the prophets who predicted them and the profit of some of the fraudulent scum who spread the nonsense.

I'm Jehovah's Witness... so I think the world will end in 1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1932, 1939, 1941, 1975, 1994 or 2004.

But no one has told me that it's going to end in 2012 yet, so I gotta say that you must have been misled by some religious fanatics.

It is suggested that the clanigans of the mayan had stopped making the calendar by then because of either a hurricane or tropical storm that had wiped them out, their ruins that allowed the sun to set and rise on the stone was situated in an area that weather affected most. Also why they knew so much about solar and lunar happenings (so to speak). After they were wiped out the other Mayans were like..dang we dont know how to do this.
