Apocalypticism (as originally developed by Zoroaster) had three main tenets:

1; Dualism. There are forces of good and there are forces of evil.
2; Impotence. Man can only choose evil or good for himself but is basically powerless to effect anything on a large or cosmic scale.
3; Vindication. God or an emissary will eventually intervene to vanquish evil, and those who have chosen good will be rewarded.

During the tyranny of Antiochus IV, who forced Pagan statues into the Jewish Temple and made certain religious practices illegal, the Jews were no longer being punished for not keeping the covenant, but for trying to keep it. Casting around for an explanation, what gained traction was Zoroastrian dualism. To which they added the fourth common tenet; Imminence. God would intervene soon.

This remained popular through the destruction of the second Temple, which understandably took the wind out of the interventionist sails. But by then the Christians had picked it up because Jesus repeatedly taught that the "Kingdom of God" was at hand. Christians have carried that banner ever since.

For both religious and non-religious, it's not so much the Imminence that's the issue, but the black and white worldview of dualism. The belief in (as Dubya put it) an "Axis of evil," combined with the idea of man's impotence in the face of it. Whether it's attributed to "original sin," or man's inhumanity to man, it's the poison of dualism that seems to be feeding the fervor.

Too many passive aggressive suicidal people? They'd rather watch the world burn than find themselves a fulfilling life. All the ones I've run into are religious. V. annoying.

Although the world has clearly never ended before, there have been mass extinctions, and we are currently in the middle of one. This is verifiable. Comparing recent fossil records to those of other times when there have been mass extinctions such as the end of the Cretaceous, the end of the Permian and so on, a similar picture emerges. Since we are alive now, at a time when many species are becoming extinct, inductive reasoning strongly suggests that we won't be around a lot longer. There are also various phenomena which can be easily identified as possible causes, for instance the increasing complexity and interdependence of the infrastructure, the consumption of scarce mineral resources, global warming, the increase in the level of dioxin in breastmilk combined with the difficulty of raising a healthy child to adulthood without it, encroaching soil erosion and desertification, and so forth. WMDs are another issue. They can't be uninvented - the knowledge is out there, and will sooner or later probably be used, causing our extinction, unless something else does first.

There are in fact so many more reasons today which are feasible possible causes of our extinction which didn't exist until recently, that the extraordinary claim is that we will survive much longer, and the delusion that we will is a symptom of widespread human grief, namely the denial stage in the bereavement process.

Face it: We're all gonna die.

Everyone knows they are going to die. For some, it's more comforting to believe that when their lives come to an end, everyone else's will as well. To know that when you die the world will carry on as if you were never here is discomforting to some.

Whenever there is an economic depression people become depressed and think the world will end. There is also the media that feeds into this fear.
