Will the world end 2012?
I personally STILL don’t think so, but I don’t think it’s impossible. This is the exact article from the August/September Edition of National Geographic Adventure magazine about how the National Grid could crash.
America’s grid runs without a hitch-most of the time. Exhibit A: the 2003 Northeast blackout, when glitchy software and overgrown trees knocked out the eastern seaboard. “We’re running as near to capacity as often as possible, and that leaves no room for abnormal events,” says Daniel Baker, Ph.D., who led a grid review by the National Academy of Sciences. The report found one gremlin: geomagnetic storms-featuring plasma balls hurled from the sun-which could knock out power to 130 million peope. The next wave of storms is expected in 2012 or 2013.
The world is predicted to end right between 2012 and 2013. Now, this may not cause an actual “end of the world” but it would be a very dramatic situation. The power could be down for months, and if it’s in the winter? It’s survival of the fittest from there. It would change the lives of everyone affected forever, disrupting education, occupations, and relationships with friends and neighbors. Lives would be lost, and taken. I’m not saying this will happen, but it’s not impossible. What do you think?

nope, The Bible says only God knows when the world will end!!! So it could be 2011 2012 2013 or even right now you never know!!!

Solar storms (coronal mass ejections) could damage our power systems, electronics, and satellite systems at any time – tomorrow, next month, in 3 years, anytime. The more we rely on technology the more at risk we are to solar activity.
2012 is just the latest maximum (actually, solar max will be in 2013) of the sun’s 11-year solar cycle.
Most solar storms statistically appear in the years AFTER solar max.
And scientists estimate (based on current observations and extrapolations) that this cycle (Cycle 24) will be less intense than originally predicted. So the chance of a CME headed in our direction with the right polarity and the right strength is low.
Not zero, of course but still low.
And you’re right, power could be out for weeks or months, communications could be non-existent, all kinds of problems.
But no one KNOWS that it will happen in 2012.
Yes, the next wave of storms is expected to peak around May of 2013. There’s no particular prediction of a single major storm (since there’s no way to predict individual events), and the peak is expected to be well below average in terms of sunspot number.
Knock out the entire electrical grid for months? Isn’t that just a leeetle bit of an extrapolation from what you read?
So basically what you’re saying is “there’s no prediction of such an event in particular, but it could happen in 2012, or it might not.” Well, that’s a statement that you could make about next Tuesday just as easily as 2012.
The world is not predicted to end between 2012 and 2013. There are no such predictions. There are only a couple of wacko websites claiming to have those predictions but they are making up the science and the “ancient prophecies” to do so, and they made the same predictions in 2003, and 2000, and 1996, and …
As for the world actually ending, that is not likely.
Your concern about the power grid might be valid.
There was a solar flare that knocked out Hydro Quebec back in (if I remember correctly) ’88 (1988, that is) and a large part of the Eastern North America with it.
As for survival, back in the :”old days”, before electicity, people survived. Everyone now is geared to the easy life, with electricity doing all the work, and there would definitely be a problem.
You need at least 90 days worth of supplies that do not depend on electricity. That gives you a chance to set up for not having electiricity as your supplies run out.
This is hard to do in an urban environment. Even a rural environment might be difficult, because as soon as people begin to realize you have “stuff”, they want it.
