I don't know what it was, but it sure didn't look like planes in formation or flares or anything like that. The guy who taped it said there was no sound from it, and on the tape it looks like it is huge. It just glided over and then was gone. People still talk about it, and I really don't know what it could have been. If it is a hoax, someone knows something about technology greater than the average person. The idea is not that outrageous; while the Hindenburg was ultimately a failure, the United States holds a virtual monopoly on the supply of non-flammable helium, versus exceptionally dangerous hydrogen. Larger lifting bodies have been developed in the past (such as the R101- see the below Wikipedia article), but have been ignored for several decades. It looks like they're back. The slowness of the lights, as well the locations in which they've been sighted, correspond well with what one would expect for developing heavy lifting bodies. There's also how helium was rationed for civilian research purposes 2-3 summers ago- the supply was unaffected, but demand must have been incredible just to fill these darned things. Air Gas and Air Liquide both cut back on how much helium we were allowed to use for research purposes. It all falls into place when one figures out it's a military "black" project to make large lifting bodies.
