Certainly, they saw *something*. Size and distance estimates for unknown airborne objects are unreliable, because the observer has to assume either a distance or a size to make such an estimate.

Like the first poster said, it is technically a UFO.

However, I think people did see something. There is a large number of reported sightings.

But it could be anything. I definitely don’t think it was alien.
